Well that works.
Classement totalement arbitraire:
Go Get A Roomie!
This hasn’t happened to me for a while, so I can complain about it without feeling bad about calling someone out!
If you love something online, sending the creator of that thing a nice note is an awesome way to let them know. It makes our day! But when you’re doing this, please please please don’t say “I love your comic, it’s so much better than [some other comic], I honestly can’t stand that thing!”
A lot of us are friends, so that’s a crappy thing to read! And even if we’re not, even if it’s a complete stranger, hearing “you’re better than this guy who sucks” isn’t the greatest compliment in the world. When I get messages like this I hesitate to even write back, because I feel like by even accepting the compliment I’m also endorsing the criticism of someone else!
Instead of “I love your [x], it’s better than [y that sucks now or perhaps has always sucked]”, I recommend "I love your [x], it’s had [y impact on my life, in any way great or small, and I wanted to say thanks]."
END OF SOCIAL CRITICISM, THANKS Y’ALL
yes, god yes
yes yes yes yes indeed
Please, this, yes, forever.
AS OF DECEMBER 14TH, WE ARE OFFICIALLY MR. AND MRS. BROWN
Which is kinda lame because Ortego is a WAY cooler last name than Brown, but hey, at least people will stop misspelling Leslie’s name and assuming she’s Spanish.
But yeah! So we’re getting married this week! It’s pretty neat! We’re just having a small little wedding at the justice of the peace here, but Leslie’s parents (who are seriously the nicest, most wonderful people I’ve ever met) are sending us ON A CRUISE! A CRUISE, MAN! As soon as the wedding’s over, Leslie and I are shuffling out on a boat and we’ll be out on the ocean for the entire week! We’ll be taking a submarine tour, we’ll be exploring ruins, WE’LL BE ON A FUCKIN’ CRUISE BOAT, MAN! This is seriously something I never thought we’d ever be able to do, EVER. But it’s happening and we’re getting married and it’s going to be AMAZING!
We’ll be back on the 19th with a million pictures to show everyone! This is probably going to be our first and only convention where we’re also not trying to sell people stuff, so you better believe we’re going to savor it! No internet, no drawing, nothin’! When we get back, not only will we get right back to updating BN, but we’ll also unleash the Fifth Year Anniversary Blaster Nation Holiday Synchtube Marathon! It was a huge hit last year and it’ll be even bigger this year! We get to come back from a goddamn honeymoon cruise and then celebrate Christmas with you guys! We are seriously the luckiest married couple in the world. I LOVE YOU GUYS!
See you guys in five days! We’ll miss you all!
CONGRATS YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey all, posting this up here because some people are mad, and having all this info in a single place that I can just link people to makes this easier.
WHAT HAPPENED: Today Hiveworks added a bit of code that tells browsers viewing our site through an iframe to not load the site. This only…
Some people have been emailing me about “why did you take out Comic Rocket??” so I’m reblogging this for them, which explains it nicely. It was not my decision per say, but the whole of our studio’s decision, which I trust has more pros than cons.
Thanks for understanding.
It’s with extreme sadness that I announce that my webcomic, I Was Kidnapped By Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space!!!, will be leaving the web in a couple weeks. It’s going to be taken down on November 5th.
This is by my own choice, a very difficult choice. As you may or may not know, the rights to LPFOS were bought by Platinum Studios in 2006. In the years since I first became involved with them, more and more of their shady practices have been revealed, to the point where I can’t be involved with them in any capacity anymore. I tried to get the rights back through many different avenues, but there is nothing I can do.
Right now, Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space is one of the comics Platinum is most proud of. They can show it off to investors as a success that they created, despite not doing a thing with the property except for one small print run 6 years ago. I have not seen a dime from them since 2007. Once the initial 6 issues they commissioned were over in 07, I was “allowed” to keep working on the series, which I did because I enjoyed the characters, but I received no payment. I received no support in any other capacity. I built the comic up by myself and with some gracious help from Hiveworks. Platinum Studios did nothing but hold it back. I had plans for a 4th and 5th arc of the comic, but ended the series this past January when I realized things with Platinum would never get better and as much as I loved these characters, I was being taken advantage of by continuing the series.
So I have to take it off the internet. I won’t let my work be used to boost the reputation of this slimy company even a little bit. I’d rather see it disappear. This decision was reached after more than a year of trying to salvage the pieces of this portion of my career, and several fits of crying until I’m too exhausted to get off the couch. I want to give you guys some time to say goodbye to it, read it one more time before it goes away.
I had great plans for it. I was hoping to print three TPBs so people could have the books in print form, and even redrew most of the first six issues in higher quality so the books would look so nice. The image above is one of the new covers I painted for one of the issues in the books. I had a script for an old-timey radio show a la Thrilling Adventure Hour. Oh, and I had a script for a full length stage musical, with a kickass composer lined up. He wrote two songs before everything imploded. These comprise a good half of my “secret projects” for the past two years that I was just itching to tell you all about, waiting for when the time would be right to reveal it. I guess everything comes out at a funeral. Again, all of these things were done without the help of Platinum. I flew out to California in 2011 for a meeting with them about these projects, which they were all gung-ho for when I was there, but once I was back home, all support was cut before it was anything more than a handshake.
I can’t help but feel so foolish. To have sold the rights in the first place, even if I was just a naive kid. To have let them blow smoke up my ass for years. To have ignored the scandals happening all around them, with so many other creators bringing grievances against them. To have continued the series for so long under such circumstances. To have held out hope I would be different and not get bit by this snake.
Young creators, please know that “getting published” is not the be-all-end-all of doing comics. There are so many people in this industry who will take advantage of your eagerness to be a “real comic artist.” Yes, you DO need a lawyer, I don’t care how must you trust that publisher, how big or small. Every contract, every time. Don’t sell something for what you think is a fair price. Know what the fair price is. Know what your value is. Know what the industry standards are. If you can’t get a good deal, don’t take a bad deal and hope for the best. Don’t take a bad deal and tell yourself it’s better than no deal at all. There are so many other avenues.
Well. That’s about it, folks. Thanks for reading, thanks for all the amazing fanart throughout the years, and the cosplay, and the lively discussions. If there’s one thing keeping me from regretting ever creating Susie and the gang, it’s you guys. I will always keep those good memories.
This is… god what a thing to go through. Please folks, show Megan your support, if you haven’t read LPFOS yet, I highly recommend it! It’s been one of my very first webcomics I’ve ever read, and it’s made me laugh so many times!
I guess this at least serves as a valuable lesson to all. Comic industry sometimes is hell to go through, if you’re not careful with your contracts. Like Megan says, know your value.
Rumble Fall updated! Leobeast is activated!
Jesus Eisu, how many comics are you working on??
(btw if some of you followers haven’t checked his stuff out yet, do eet, the art-style is friggin’ sweet!)
We’ve hit $30,000 in less than 48 hours. At current rates we’re going to at least hit $50,000. If we hit 75k I will melt into a puddle of cheese.
My good friend Chloe just started her Kickstarter for her wonderful comic Go Get a Roomie. Now, if you like humor, sexy ladies and adorable drawings, you really can’t miss this.
Three thousand bucks more to go and the book is funded. It hasn’t even been 24 hours. I just…
I’m so happy for you dude, you have no idea! *rejoices*
It happened. Go Get a Roomie- The book, was actually funded in 24 hours exactly.
Good gracious me and all of the world’s wonders.
I couldn’t decide what to draw, so I drew everything.
These are all the comics I currently read (plus a couple special mentions). Since I can’t fit them all in the tags, and since half these characters are probably unrecognizable the way I drew them, here’s a convenient list of all the comics involved.
Amazing Super Powers, Awkward Zombie, Bittersweet Candy Bowl, Brawl in the Family, Buttersafe, Chimneyspeak, Cucumber Quest, Darths and Droids, Dr McNinja, Dresden Codak, Dumbing of Age, Effort Comics, Frog Raccoon Strawberry, Gaia, Gastrophobia, Girly, Go Get a Roomie, Gunnerkrigg Court, Happle Tea, Hark a Vagrant, Katamari, Late Blooming, Life Aint No Pony Farm, Menage a 3, Miamaska, minus, Misfile, Nerf Now, Nuzlocke Comics, Octopus Pie, Para-Ten, Sandra and Woo, Sister Claire, Skadi, Space Cat, Templar Arizona, The Intrepid Girlbot, The Meek, VG Cats, Witch Knots, xkcd, You Suck.
So many webcomics!!! I’m still astounded at how many of them I’ve never heard of. Thanks for including Roomie and heyyy LT as well! I see her :D
Neil Gaiman-senpai noticed my comic! Now we’re talking bigtime!
Thank you for all your pledges, tweets, reblogs, and posts! I am so moved by the generous and enthusiastic response we’ve seen. We’re very close to reaching our goal! Once we hit 8K, we’ll be releasing some awesome stretch rewards!
There are still some cool rewards yet to be claimed, including custom sketches and full-color headshots by myself, and a full-color illustration by Chloe C. of “Go Get A Roomie!”
Dead jealous and super happy for Yamino at the same time. She earned it. If you haven’t checked the Kickstarter yet, please do! <3
(god, neil gaiman ughhhhhhh<3333 I can’t)
Your prayers have been answered! The greatest webcomic in the universe* is being miraculously reborn into solid paper!
*Word of G.O.D.
It’s all fixed, but still. Bored hackers are bored, they have nothing else to do but bother little artsies now~
So if you have a webcomic somewhere, make sure it stays safe!
BY DEMAND - TOP “GIRLY” 10 COMICS THAT DON’T SUCK FOR PRE-TEEN GIRLS
(According to me)
These are a list of comics I consider to have for primary market young girls. I excluded anything unisex (like Amulet) or that has dudes as a main market but can be read, and are often adored, by girls (aka shonen manga).
Also, i’m French. Expect french in here.
#1 - LOU! - French series about a creative girl and her single mom. The mom is a fantasy writer and obsessed by video games. Lou, the daughter, dreams of being a fashion designer or a poet. The cast is original and multicultural, representing different styles of today’s youth. And every book focuses on an issue that matches Lou’s age, since she gains a year with every book (like Harry Potter). I love book 3, who focuses strongly on depression. There’s a TV show, but the books are superior by far, since the show is stuck in status quo land.
#2 - Re-gifters - Fantastic story about Dixie, a second-generation Korean immigration and a martial arts student who has unfortunately lost her focus (aka ki) due to a big, big doom crush. She needs to digest the crush and find a way to win the big competition. This is short, sweet, all about the troubles of being a confused teen and an immigrant. Brilliant.
#3 - The Yoko Tsuno series - Pretty much one of the only unsexualized female comic hero I had as a kid, Yoko is a science-fiction-slash-police-drama series. This woman went to space. She played with ghosts. And robots. AND GHOST ROBOTS.
#4 - Friends with boys by Faith Erin Hicks - Man, does this comic even need an introduction? I’m in love with it.
#5 - Anya’s Ghost - Anya is a russian immigrant who feels fat, silly, and generally hates everyone. Everything changes when she falls down a well and meets a ghost down there. They become best friends… up until the ghost starts living vicariously thru her with way too much passion.
#6 - Gunnerkrigg court - Technically, a webcomic, but since the books exist, it’s fully possible for me to push it unto schools. I get the feeling this story is unisex most of the time, but a couple of details push it in the girl territory, for me. Amazing webcomics about two friends in a strange school…
#7 - Card Captor Sakura - Short magical girl series by Clamp… it’s pretty much all about awesome spells and acceptance. Me likey.
#8 - Elinor Jones - In victorian times, a girl wants to become a seamstress for the renown house of Tiffany. But the work is hard, and the girl suffers from body image issues and eating disorders. Lots of pretty dresses, cool characters and important issues explored very nicely.
#9 - Princesse Sara - Based on the book “Little Princess”, it’s a steampunk retelling of the classic Cinderella tale.
#10 - Smile - Raina gets braces. We all remember how much that sucks.
* End of the list, please reblog and ADD. Once I removed the “unisex” or “guy but can be read by girls” stuff, it was actually pretty difficult to compile this list. Go figure.
Lou is truly the best teen comic I have ever read. It’s fun, hilarious, true, and touching.
